Culture is Soulfood!

On Saturday, August 14, 2021, the Carnival of Cultures should have taken place in Berlins Streets. An event that many people in Berlin look forward to every year and spend months preparing for it, sewing and crafting costumes and floats and rehearsing choeographies. Also the motion*s has been there for several years with the group #wasbewegt Dich.

Due to the pandemic, the carnival has been cancelled this year as well despite massive safety precautions. Nevertheless, we wanted to make a statement, especially after more than a year of lockdown for all cultural institutions, we wanted to say: culture and dance is an important part of life for many people in this city. Culture is soulfood!

So we registered our own dance demonstration and walked from Moritzplatz to Oranienplatz.

OUR DEMANDS

We demand that culture can take place.

We demand transparent regulations and a lead time as well as security with which to plan.

We take to the streets for the visibility of dance and culture in public space.

We want to clearly express how necessary it is for art to take place in a way that is accessible to all.

The common practice of culture brings people together and helps societies to function together.

Where would we be without culture?!

The demonstrators are dancers from motion*s dance & movement studio.

Under the group name #WAS BEWEGT DICH we have been participating in the Carnival of Cultures for 4 years. This year, despite an elaborate concept, the carnival did not take place.

This is a bitter setback for cultural activists of Berlin. The carnival stands for the direct coming together of all interested people and is a low-threshold experience for all people from all walks of life.

Due to the pandemic, the carnival has been cancelled this year as well. Nevertheless, we wanted to make a statement, especially after more than a year of lockdown for all cultural institutions, we wanted to say: culture and dance is an important part of life for many people in this city. Culture is food and a central part of peoples lifes.
